At the heart of the biodynamic method are the preparations used to enhance the health and vitality of the soil.

In Biodynamics for Beginners, experienced biodynamic practitioner Hugh Courtney explains the basics of how to make the essential biodynamic preparations. As well as outlining ways to effectively make the preparations, this book also includes lots of Courtney’s own practical tips for success.

This book comprises articles from the journal Applied Biodynamics. They are very practical, with little theory, and share the technical know-how for making the biodynamic preparations.

Illustrated throughout, this is a helpful guidebook for anyone who is committed to becoming a successful biodynamic farmer or gardener.

Hugh J. Courtney (1932-2020) first discovered Rudolf Steiner's Agriculture Course in 1975 at a health food store in College Park, Maryland, which led him to Josephine Porter, who was making the biodynamic preparations according to Steiner's indications. Hugh apprenticed under Josephine and, when she died in 1984, he continued her work, founding the Josephine Porter Institute for Applied Biodynamics in 1985. Hugh was editor of the newsletter Applied Biodynamics.
